Otolaryngology is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the ear, nose and throat. Some of the more common conditions are described below. Otology is a branch of medicine which studies normal and pathological anatomy and physiology of the ear (hearing and vestibular sensory systems and related structures and functions) as well as their diseases, diagnosis and treatment. Otologic surgery generally refers to surgery of the middle ear and mastoid related to chronic otitis media, such as tympanoplasty, or ear drum surgery.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES OF THE EARS• Three pathways for pathogens to enter: 1. Through eustachian (auditory) tube, from the throat and nasopharynx. 2. From external ear. 3. Through the blood or lymph.• OTITIS MEDIA: Infection of middle ear.• OTITIS EXTERNA: Infection of the outer ear canal. 3. VIRAL AND BACTERIAL INFECTIONS OF EAR 4. A diagnosis of classical EDS is typically based on the presence of characteristic signs and symptoms. More than 90% of classical EDS patients have mutations in one of the genes encoding type V collagen (the COL5A1 gene or the COL5A2 gene). Rare cases are caused by a mutation in the COL1A1 gene. Genetic testing for a mutation in these genes can then be ordered to confirm the diagnosis .
